Khmer New Year celebration is to mark the end of the old year and the beginning of a new year. However, Cambodian new year is not celebrated in the first day when the new year begins. But it’s celebrated before or even after the first day of the new year. Because the new year days is calculated according to Moha Sangkran.

The old year, year of dragon, 2556 BE will be finished on the full moon day of Bhisak, the 6th month of Luna calendar (១៥កើតខែពិសាខ). It will be on May 24, 2013.  And the next day, May 25 2013 is the beginning of the snake year, 2557 BE.

Nevertheless, Khmer New Year 2013 will be celebrated before the actual new year day of 2557 BE. It’s fall on April 14, 15, and 16.

New Year Angel of the Snake Year 2557 BE

Because the new year day is on Sunday so the angel for the year of Snake is the oldest daughter of Kabil Moha Prum, Tungsa Tevy (ទុង្សាទេវី). She wear a ruby necklace, and on her hair adorn with a pomegranate flower hairpin. Her weapon are  disc (ច័ក្រ) and shell (ស័ង្ខ). Fig fruit (ផ្លែល្វា) is her favorite food. Her vehicle is garuda (គ្រុឌ).

The Khmer new year angel of 2013 will be arrived on April 14, 2013 at 2:12 am (the night of April 13)

What are the offering to welcome the new year angel?

The offerings in command are simple:

  1. 5 incense sticks, 5 candle (ទៀន៥ធូប៥)
  2.  A pair of decorated young banana tree (ស្លាធម៍កូនចេក១គូ)
  3. 3 kinds of fruits, each kind prepared into 2 trays
  4. Small jasmine flower braids to put on every offering
  5. And the special offering for Tungsa Tevy is her favorite food, Fig fruit (ផ្លែល្វា)

Beside those required offerings, you can prepare as many other offerings as you like such as: candy, cokes, biscuits, milk, etc.
